Remix is a project to reimagine and facilitate the city’s informal trash collection, in the interim period before formal recycling structures take hold.
Every day, the bins are mined for recyclables by the city’s informal waste collectors, who exchange paper, plastic, and metal goods for small profits. The informal system is efficient, and pervasive, with most bins seeing several collectors each hour. The constant digging, sorting, and opening of bags, however, has caused some trouble in the city. The lids for the bins are often left open by the collectors, and unwanted trash is quickly strewn about the street.
